Folks everywhere love baseball. Whether you have been playing this sport or are only just getting into it, some of these tips can help you play the game better. Here, you will find the types of tips that can set you apart from the rest.
Build Your Arm Strength
If you’d like to increase your arm strength, make sure you’re out there every day throwing the baseball and swinging your bat. The more you perform the motion, the easier it becomes. You don’t need to lift weights to build up your arm strength. Continuously throwing a baseball or swinging a bat will work wonders.
For the Coaches
When you are coaching a baseball team, remember to keep them happy and motivated to play, which goes a long way to their wanting to win. Pizza parties and the like go far in helping a team bond. Remember that baseball is just a game, and the world doesn’t end if you lose. If while coaching you see that your team is losing its focus, mix things up for awhile. If you’re always working on the same drills, then people will start to get bored. Therefore, mix things up during practices.
Sliding and Timing
Sliding is an important skill that many baseball players do not know how to do. You cannot be afraid of the dirt. A perfect slide involves timing. You want your foot to hit the base as quickly as possible. Practice sliding daily until you can accurately judge when to begin your slide for maximum distance.
Practice your defense
Sure pitching and batting get all of the glory, but being a great defensive player is worth just as much to your team. The ability to save a run is just as valuable as the ability to create a run. Both are needed to win ball games.
P.E. is for Protective Equipment
Always wear protective equipment when playing baseball. Just like any sport, injuries happen in baseball. Especially when batting, you need to protect your head. That means you need to wear a helmet whenever you enter the batter’s box. One poor pitch can mean a fastball hitting you in the noggin. That’s at minimum a ringing headache with the potential for a concussion or worse. Be safe.
Get the Pitcher’s Timing
Before stepping in to face a new pitcher, take a couple of practice swings while he’s facing another batter. Use the time to measure the pitcher’s timing. This will give you a better opportunity to have a quality at bat against the pitcher. Otherwise, you may be outclassed pretty quickly.
Don’t showboat
Some sports condone showboating, like a touchdown dance in football. But in baseball, showboating after a home run or a big strikeout is very much frowned upon. It’s the type of thing that causes a lot of bad blood between teams, and it can easy cause rifts among teammates.
Break in Your New Glove
Use Neatsfoot Oil to break in a new baseball glove. When you get a new glove, rub neatsfoot oil into the pocket area of the glove. Next place a baseball there and tie a rope around the glove and baseball. Repeat this process a few times for the first month you have the glove.
Don’t let a losing streak get to you
Losing streaks happen in every sport, but in baseball luck can play a very big factor on any given day. Losing streaks can be prolonged over many games. Never let it get you down. Approach each game with an air of self confidence and soon you’ll beat that slump.
Eyes on the Pitcher
Keep both of your eyes on the pitcher when you play baseball. This helps you to see them better versus just using one eye. The earlier you can pick up on the ball, the better your chances are at being successful. Never take your eyes off that ball while you prepare to swing.
Power Bunting
Practice bunting, even if you are a power hitter. Bunting is a bit of a lost art in baseball. The idea is to simply tap the ball into play, taking the infield, pitcher and catcher off-guard. This is a smart tactic to move a teammate over from first to second or to even score an infield hit. A power hitter bunting is so unexpected that it really can be effective. To lay down a successful bunt, keep the head of the bat above the handle. If the head dips down, you are more likely to pop your bunt up. Keeping the head up allows you to bunt the top half of the ball, pushing it down toward the ground. One of the least utilized hits in baseball is the bunt. To properly bunt the ball, you must point the baseball bat’s tip toward second base. As the ball approaches, slightly change the angle of your front foot so that it is facing first base. This will help you gain the maximum speed.
Must Have Pitches
To throw a curve ball, place both your index and middle fingers along a seam of the baseball. As you throw the pitch, slide your fingers down toward the ground in a clockwise direction if you are right-handed (counterclockwise if you are left-handed). This motion gives the pitch its curve.
If you want a good knuckleball, you have to hold the seams with just your fingertips. That will ensure the ball is spinless, following the wind and moving at the last second. When the hitter misses the ball, your knuckle ball worked.
There is a lot of skill that is necessary for baseball. You should now have the advice you need to start playing well, so keep these things in mind. Even though there is a lot to learn about the sport, nothing beats actually going out and playing it yourself.
